Final act

Updated: Feb 21, 2024

A receptacle shaped to sides

tapered to fit the rotting remains

Lying down for one final place

of the rest, long delayed and denied

From clay-urns baked around the deceased,

humble wraps of cloth covered with hay and twigs, turtle shells hewn in wicker basket

or slip coffins recycled for the unaffording

To the custom-made works of stone and steel

suited to reflect the status in society

A sarcophagus elaborate with hieroglyphics

or a casket adorned with mementoes

of life that slipped away yet won't wear off easy

Funerary texts to guide the travel in the underworld

where nobody has ever lost their way

or managed to return whence

Some bearing pores to allow the earth

seep through and claim her loan at once

And others lined with copper, zinc and velvet

to delay the decay to no end or purpose

Preparing for the last show under the soil

for the maggots that couldn't care less

how their putrid meal was dressed

The last coop to contain the desires unending,

that remain ever the unmet

and continue to ensure eternal unrest,

tossing and turning in the elaborate casket,

missing out on the earthy embrace

The joy of becoming one with the rest,

becoming the truth dodged through life,

denied yet again until the rotting away

of the casket elaborate

A world of disquiet and discrimination

ensured to churn under our feet

as we continue to trod in ignorance

trying to leave our mark

on the waters of life

As the headstone stands erect,

a stand-up comedian

performing the final act,

mocking the irony of the

'Rest In Peace'

scrawled across its face.
