Great from the start

great to end with

Great was his every move

planned or otherwise

For the precise timing of his birth

the stars had aligned

to form a configuration

unlike any in their lifetime

His schooling was remarkable

for being unremarkable

until some anecdotes were added

for flair and foundation

The time he chose

to leap into action

and the causes he made

his unique mission

weren't so big,

nor burning enough

until he added to them

his fire of greatness

Marching on the path

at once to become

What he was destined to being

- a great man from the end to the beginning

Biographers lined

to vie his prolific correspondence

and meticulously maintained diaries

over years of being great, a day at a time

He'd even dabbled in poetry,

it was later found,

But that couldn't be held

against his greatness

Yet what made him truly great

was his always being convinced

of his having been born

for things higher, greater, bigger

than the banalities

he found himself girted in

like millions before

and millions after him

Only he was sure,

only he could be,

the great man among

the ordinary that remained ordinary
