Crooning past midnight
songs of many species
Birds, insects, amphibians
few spared of their mocking
A lullaby to the hungry ears
deprived of their meat
For, none among the civilised
or the savage roaming the woods
Found their feathers, claws or beak
worth their demise
And, so goes on
mocking the world
A bird that can be at once
an insect, a frog, even human
Ah, to be a mockingbird
The delight of being spared extinction
at the hands of the mighty
that passed evolution
with flying colours
