Much better
Far worse
I could have been
Born with strong wings
needing no engines
to soar the limited skies
Planted in one place
rooted to earth
stuck with the same view
for the rest of my
windowless existence
Rolling, unrolling, rolling again
one among countless
rocks, pebbles of any size and shape
on the torso of a mountain
in the belly of an ocean
Becoming the very definition
of inconsequential
Melting in hours or less,
packed amid many
like and unlike myself
A snowflake trampled
cautiously or unawares
Forgotten by evolution
left to become another name
for food, game, greed or fear
Caged behind bars or under
frames of convenience
I could have been
much better
far worse
Stripped of all woes,
rid of all amazement,
Not even left with
a peppering of passion for taste
Unaware of self
a product of perception
a residue of ignorance
I could have been
much better
far worse
than a human
who reads and writes
poems
