In the middle of a dream
toward the end of a nightmare
Waiting with abated breath
to take away yours
Waiting to pounce on your slumber
just as the body, mind or whatever
is coming awake
for yet another day
A wave of panic
a sigh of non-relief
just a deep breath trying to reach
unexplored crevices
holding the stifling moments
the remnants of many yesterdays undead
A deluge of identities,
a tsunami of memories
drawn out to drown you
yet again
lest you forget
who you were
last night
and the day before
before you went to bed
before you were embraced
by the all-forgiving warmth of sleep
Skipped deadlines
overdue bills
missed payments
unbeaten heartaches ossified
and all the other non-reasons
to keep at bay
the bliss that need await
yet another night
at the end of the day
When everything will
once again
cease to matter
in the realm of death
that you get to taste
without having to go through
the trouble of dying
each night
