Trailing off midsentence
a wall of silence
rose between us
She stared at me
I was supposed to see
what she had left from saying
Lips clenched firm
iris widened
lines of her eyes asking me
Laughter had died
Smile tried slinking away
Romance had taken
a sudden leave of sickness
Moment had stopped
for more than
a moment's lifetime
The depth of silence
the girth of the speech
Nothing could penetrate
the wall that had suddenly
raised itself between us
The only way past the impasse
was for me to become her
unbecoming me
and obviate the need
to speak, to hear
or feel the silence
All of which had now become
oblivious of who we were
when not one another
Silence may speak louder than words
But there are things stronger
than unspoken silence
